Chickens birth control

Power to the hens!  I found this really fastinating!

Female chickens have the weirdest birth control method ever

Female chickens are among the most promiscuous members of the animal kingdom, with wild and domestic fowl alike tending to mate with way more males than necessary to fertilize their eggs.

But just because they get around doesn’t mean these hens aren’t selective about who they choose to reproduce with. In fact, recent research shows that female……More

Chickens and other birds are thought to have descended from dinosaurs. Scientists want to create a mini dinosaur from a chicken embryo. They have already created a chicken embryo with a snout! Anyone else thinking “Jurassic Park”?!

Chook Trader this week.

This week, a lot of the progress on Chook Trader has been taking place behind the scenes.  In response to feedback from our followers we have added:

The change to include classified adverts for poultry equipment has been a popular one and has resulted in a flurry of people listing their coops, feeders, poultry plucker and incubators for sale.

Are there any other changes you would like to see?

P.S.  Thanks to Milkwood Permaculture for their Facebook link to our site last week

The chicken story

It is a serious situation (an egg bound hen) but this story is very funny –  one Facebook fan commented “that is the funniest story I have read for a long, long time”!

Enjoy…..

So last Thursday evening, I went into the chicken coop around dusk to collect eggs and shut them in for the night and Claire was still on the nest. Not normal for a chicken to still be on the nest in the evening. I made a mental note to check her out the next morning, already becoming paranoid as to what this might mean. The next morning she was on the nest as well. She looked uncomfortable and seemed to be flexing her nether regions….y’know, where the eggs come out. Oh God. She is egg bound. Freak out a little bit. I felt her abdomen and it sort of felt like an egg was hanging out…..more

Chook Traders first week!

Hi, and thanks for dropping by.

Chook Trader has been online now for one week and the welcome you have all given has been fantastic. We have had a lot of registrations, a lot more hits than first expected and our first listings. I would like to extend a big thank you to those who have listed their chicks, ducks, pullets and fertile eggs for sale.

This week has been fun and continues to be a wonderful learning curve. Here are a few things I have learned:

  1. Poultry people are fantastic
  2. People are finding Chook Trader through Google even though we have only been running a week
  3. My local pizza restaurant does gluten free pizza with REAL toppings. Roast pumpkin is my new favourite. (I have been quite busy –  any excuse to get out of cooking!)
  4. There are a lot of people out there who love the idea of Chook Trader.
  5. Most people use the site in the evenings

WHY AND HOW? Listing chickens, ducks and other poultry for sale on Chook Trader

Why should I list my chickens, ducks and other live poultry for sale on Chook Trader?  After all, it is a new and unproven site.  Will people actually see my advert?

Well, I am really excited to be able to say yes! – Because we are new, we are advertising a little differently to other sites and are getting a wide of visitors that may not usually turn to the internet to find chickens for sale. Those visitors are having a good look around and will be looking at your adverts.

How much does it cost to advertise live chickens, ducks and other poultry for sale?

A basic classified advert for selling live poultry and fertile eggs is FREE. With a basic free advert, you can choose to list for either one, two or four weeks and upload up to two photos (optional). If you sign up today, you can also take advantage of our introductory credit offer. This will give you a $10 Chook Trader account credit that you can use for:

  • upgrading your listing to a “bold” or
  • “featured listing” (appears on the home page for a period of time) or
  • adding extra photos
  • and a few other features we will talk about later

How do I list my advert?

It is as easy as 1, 2 3…

  1. Click on “register” towards the right of the screen, below the word “about” (not shown on the screen shot below!)
  2. Once your registration is confirmed, click on the “sell” tab. Your screen should look like the picture below
  3. If you are selling live poultry, simply click on “new classified” towards the left hand side of the screen and follow the instructions. If you are selling poultry equipment, then click on new auction and follow the instructions.
